Although popular with his kitchen staff and hostess Molly, he clashes with the restaurant&rsquo;s owner, Riva, who wants him to stick to the same menu of classical cuisine rather than innovative dishes.<\/p>\n<p>Carl also has a strained relationship with his rich ex-wife, Inez, and their tech-savvy preteen son, Percy.<\/p>\n<p>When Carl has the chance to serve prestigious food critic and blogger Ramsey Michel, Riva demands he prepare old favorites at the last minute rather than the innovative ones he wants; Carl concedes, leading to a scathing review. Carl insults Ramsey on\u00a0<a title=\"Twitter\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Twitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a>, not realizing that his reply is public, and gains a large online following. He comes up with a new menu that his staff loves and invites Ramsey to a \u00ab\u00a0rematch\u00a0\u00bb, but quits after confronting Riva, who wants the old menu again.<\/p>\n<p>At home, Carl prepares the menu he wanted, while his\u00a0<a title=\"Sous-chef\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sous-chef\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sous-chef<\/a>\u00a0Tony serves Ramsey the same dishes from his prior visit. Ramsey tweets negatively about Carl, provoking him into a confrontation at the restaurant. Videos of Carl&rsquo;s meltdown go\u00a0<a title=\"Viral video\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Viral_video\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">viral<\/a>, leaving him humiliated and unemployable.<\/p>\n<p>Carl reluctantly accepts Inez&rsquo;s invitation to accompany her and Percy to Miami, where he rediscovers his love for\u00a0<a title=\"Cuban cuisine\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cuban_cuisine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cuban cuisine<\/a>. At her encouragement, her ex-husband Marvin offers him a dilapidated\u00a0<a title=\"Food truck\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Food_truck\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">food truck<\/a>. Carl and Percy bond while restoring the truck and buying groceries, and Carl gives him a\u00a0<a title=\"Chef&#039;s knife\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chef%27s_knife\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chef&rsquo;s knife<\/a>. Martin, Carl&rsquo;s friend and former line cook, turns down his promotion at Gauloises to join him, whose passion as a chef has been reignited.<\/p>\n<p>Carl, Martin, and Percy drive the truck across the country to Los Angeles, serving\u00a0<a title=\"Cuban sandwich\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cuban_sandwich\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cuban sandwiches<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Cassava\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cassava\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">yuca<\/a>\u00a0fries. Percy promotes them on\u00a0<a title=\"Social media\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Social_media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a>, and they find success in\u00a0<a title=\"New Orleans\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Orleans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Orleans<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Austin, Texas\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Austin,_Texas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Austin<\/a>, where their daily specials include\u00a0<a title=\"Po&#039; boy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Po%27_boy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">po&rsquo; boys<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Beignet\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Beignet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">beignets<\/a>\u00a0and barbecued\u00a0<a title=\"Brisket\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brisket\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brisket<\/a>, made with local ingredients.<\/p>\n<p>Back in LA, having strengthened his relationship with Percy, Carl accepts his son&rsquo;s offer to help with the food truck, with Inez also joining them. Ramsey visits the truck to explain his bad review: though an early fan of Carl, he was disappointed by a meal he felt was beneath Carl&rsquo;s skills. Impressed with the chef&rsquo;s return to form, Ramsey offers to bankroll a new restaurant where Carl will have full creative control. the writer, director, and star of\u00a0<i>Chef<\/i>; wrote the film&rsquo;s script in about two weeks.<\/p>\n<p><sup id=\"cite_ref-thr_6-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>He had long wanted to make a film about food and chefs, and felt that the subject was suited to a small-scale\u00a0<a title=\"Independent film\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Independent_film\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">independent film<\/a>\u00a0rather than a big-budget production.<\/p>\n<p><sup id=\"cite_ref-thr_6-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-vulture_7-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>He cited\u00a0<i><a title=\"Jiro Dreams of Sushi\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jiro_Dreams_of_Sushi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jiro Dreams of Sushi<\/a><\/i>,\u00a0<i><a title=\"Eat Drink Man Woman\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eat_Drink_Man_Woman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eat Drink Man Woman<\/a><\/i>, and\u00a0<i><a title=\"Big Night\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Big_Night\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Big Night<\/a><\/i>\u00a0as inspirations for creating a food-centric film.<sup id=\"cite_ref-vulture_7-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The script was semi-autobiographical, incorporating parts of Favreau&rsquo;s life into the main character, such as being a father while having a busy career and coming from a \u00ab\u00a0broken home\u00a0\u00bb.<sup id=\"cite_ref-thr_6-2\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>Favreau also drew a comparison between his career as a director and Carl&rsquo;s career as a chef; he stepped down from directing major studio films to go \u00ab\u00a0back to basics\u00a0\u00bb and create\u00a0<i>Chef<\/i>\u00a0on a smaller budget, much like Carl&rsquo;s resignation from a popular restaurant to work in a food truck.<sup id=\"cite_ref-oregon_5-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Favreau contacted\u00a0<a title=\"Roy Choi\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roy_Choi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Roy Choi<\/a>, a restaurateur who created the\u00a0<a title=\"Kogi Korean BBQ\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kogi_Korean_BBQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kogi Korean BBQ<\/a>\u00a0food truck, to serve as a consultant on the film; Choi was eventually promoted to co-producer.
