The Martian<\/b><\/i>\u00a0is a 2015\u00a0science fiction film<\/a>\u00a0directed by\u00a0Ridley Scott<\/a>\u00a0and starring\u00a0Matt Damon<\/a>.\u00a0Drew Goddard<\/a>\u00a0adapted the screenplay from\u00a0the 2011 novel<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0Andy Weir<\/a>. It also stars\u00a0Jessica Chastain<\/a>,\u00a0Jeff Daniels<\/a>,\u00a0Kristen Wiig<\/a>,\u00a0Chiwetel Ejiofor<\/a>,\u00a0Sean Bean<\/a>,\u00a0Michael Pe\u00f1a<\/a>,\u00a0Kate Mara<\/a>,\u00a0Sebastian Stan<\/a>,\u00a0Aksel Hennie<\/a>,\u00a0Mackenzie Davis<\/a>,\u00a0Donald Glover<\/a>, and\u00a0Benedict Wong<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The film depicts an astronaut’s struggle to survive on\u00a0Mars<\/a>\u00a0after being left behind and\u00a0NASA<\/a>‘s efforts to return him to Earth.<\/p>\n

The Martian<\/i>\u00a0was produced through\u00a020th Century Fox<\/a>\u00a0in the United Kingdom and the United States. Producer\u00a0Simon Kinberg<\/a>\u00a0began developing the film after Fox\u00a0optioned<\/a> the novel in March 2013. Goddard, who adapted the novel into a screenplay, was initially attached to direct, but production was only approved after Scott replaced Goddard as director and Damon was cast as the main character.<\/p>\n

Filming began in November 2014 and lasted about 70 days. Twenty sets were built on one of the largest sound stages in the world in\u00a0Budapest<\/a>, Hungary.\u00a0Wadi Rum<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0Jordan<\/a>\u00a0was also used for exterior filming.<\/p>\n

The film premiered at the\u00a02015 Toronto International Film Festival<\/a>\u00a0on September 11, 2015.<\/p>\n

It was released in the UK on September 30, 2015, and in the US on October 2, 2015, in 2D,\u00a03D<\/a>,\u00a0IMAX 3D<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a04DX<\/a>.<\/p>\n

<\/sup>It received positive reviews and\u00a0numerous accolades<\/a>, including seven nominations at the\u00a088th Academy Awards<\/a>.
