Black Mirror<\/b><\/i>\u00a0is a British\u00a0anthology<\/a>\u00a0television series created by\u00a0Charlie Brooker<\/a>. *The series explores various genres, with most episodes set in near-future dystopias<\/a>\u00a0containing\u00a0sci-fi<\/a>\u00a0technology\u2014a type of\u00a0speculative fiction<\/a>. The series is inspired by\u00a0The Twilight Zone<\/a><\/i>\u00a0and uses the themes of technology and media to comment on contemporary social issues. Most episodes are written by Brooker with involvement by the executive producer\u00a0Annabel Jones<\/a>.<\/p>\n

There are 33 episodes in seven series and one special, in addition to the\u00a0interactive film<\/a>\u00a0Black Mirror: Bandersnatch<\/a><\/i>\u00a0(2018).<\/p>\n

The first two series aired on the British network\u00a0Channel 4<\/a>\u00a0in 2011 and 2013, as did the 2014 special \u00ab\u00a0White Christmas<\/a>\u00ab\u00a0.<\/p>\n

The programme then moved to\u00a0Netflix<\/a>, where five further series aired in 2016, 2017, 2019, 2023, and 2025. Two related\u00a0webisode<\/a>\u00a0series were produced by Netflix, and a companion book to the first four series,\u00a0Inside Black Mirror<\/i>, was published in 2018. Soundtracks to many episodes have been released as albums.<\/p>\n

Black Mirror<\/i>\u00a0is considered by some reviewers to be one of the best television series of the 2010s, while some critics have found the formulaic morality themes of the series obvious or have cited declining quality. The programme won the\u00a0Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Television Movie<\/a>\u00a0three times consecutively for \u00ab\u00a0San Junipero<\/a>\u00ab\u00a0, \u00ab\u00a0USS Callister<\/a>\u00a0\u00bb and\u00a0Bandersnatch<\/i>.\u00a0Black Mirror<\/i>, along with\u00a0American Horror Story<\/a><\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0Inside No. 9<\/a><\/i>, has been credited with reviving the anthology television format and a number of episodes have been deemed prescient by the media.<\/p>\n

The series was originally commissioned by\u00a0Channel 4<\/a>\u00a0in the United Kingdom and premiered in December 2011. A second series ran during February 2013. In September 2015,\u00a0Netflix<\/a>\u00a0purchased the programme, commissioning a series of 12 episodes later divided into two series of six episodes.<\/p>\n

<\/sup>The first six episodes were released simultaneously on Netflix worldwide as the overall third series on 21 October 2016. The fourth series of six episodes was released on 29 December 2017.<\/p>\n

<\/sup>A fifth series consisting of three episodes was released on 5 June 2019.<\/sup>The first four series, as well as the special \u00ab\u00a0White Christmas<\/a>\u00ab\u00a0, have been released on DVD. <\/sup>A sixth series was commissioned in 2022 and was released on 15 June 2023.<\/p>\n
