It is an adaptation of the\u00a0<a title=\"Wilkie Collins\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wilkie_Collins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wilkie Collins<\/a>\u00a01868 novel\u00a0<a title=\"The Moonstone\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Moonstone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">of the same name<\/a>\u00a0described by T.S. Eliot as the first and greatest of English detective novels. It stars Josh Silver and\u00a0<a title=\"John Thomson (comedian)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Thomson_(comedian)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John Thomson<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Dowell_1-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Rachel Verinder, a young English woman, inherits a large Indian diamond on her eighteenth birthday. It is a legacy from her uncle, a corrupt British army officer who served in India. The diamond is of great religious significance as well as being extremely valuable, and three Hindu priests have dedicated their lives to recovering it. Rachel&rsquo;s eighteenth birthday is celebrated with a large party, at which the guests include her cousin Franklin Blake.<\/p>\n<p>She wears the Moonstone on her dress that evening for all to see, including some Indian jugglers who have called at the house. An especially popular brand was Louis Roederer&rsquo;s, who shipped a third of his production to Russia.<\/p>\n<p>Cristal was first created for\u00a0<a title=\"Alexander II of Russia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alexander_II_of_Russia\">Alexander II of Russia<\/a>, and is viewed by many as the first\u00a0<i><a title=\"Champagne\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Champagne#Prestige_cuv.C3.A9e\">prestige cuv\u00e9e<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><sup id=\"cite_ref-wd-c_1-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>As the political situation in Russia at the time of his rule was unstable, the Tsar feared assassination.<\/p>\n<p>Thus when he visited Paris in 1867 for the\u00a0<a title=\"Exposition Universelle (1867)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Exposition_Universelle_(1867)\">Exposition Universelle<\/a>, the Tsar ordered that champagne bottles for the lavish dinner he hosted for the Prussian King\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Wilhelm I\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wilhelm_I\">Wilhelm I<\/a>\u00a0and Chancellor\u00a0<a title=\"Otto von Bismarck\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Otto_von_Bismarck\">Otto von Bismarck<\/a>\u00a0(later termed the\u00a0<a title=\"Three Emperors Dinner\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Three_Emperors_Dinner\">Three Emperors Dinner<\/a>) be made clear, so that he could see the bubbles and also to prevent an explosive being hidden beneath them, as could happen with a typical dark green indented bottle.<\/p>\n<p><sup id=\"cite_ref-menus_2-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>Louis Roederer commissioned a Flemish glassmaker to create a clear\u00a0<a title=\"Lead glass\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lead_glass\">lead glass<\/a>\u00a0Champagne bottle with a flat bottom.<\/p>\n<p>The Champagne has since become known as \u00ab\u00a0Cristal\u00a0\u00bb.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Oxford_pg_584-585_3-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The wine was not commercially available until 1945.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Stevenson_4-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>In the mid 1990s to early 2000s,\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Hip hop music\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hip_hop_music\">hip hop music<\/a>\u00a0discovered the brand, with several artists referencing the drink in song lyrics and as part of their public image, including\u00a0<a title=\"Raekwon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Raekwon\">Raekwon<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"50 Cent\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/50_Cent\">50 Cent<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"The Notorious B.I.G.\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Notorious_B.I.G.\">The Notorious B.I.G.<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"R. Those in hip hop sometimes used the nickname \u00ab\u00a0Crissy\u00a0\u00bb for the drink.<\/p>\n<p><sup id=\"cite_ref-Obs_5-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-NYT_6-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><a title=\"Tupac Shakur\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tupac_Shakur\">Tupac Shakur<\/a>\u00a0created a cocktail called \u00ab\u00a0Thug Passion\u00a0\u00bb, which is a blend of\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Aliz\u00e9 (beverage)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aliz%C3%A9_(beverage)\">Aliz\u00e9 Gold Passion<\/a>\u00a0and Cristal.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with\u00a0<i><a title=\"The Economist\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Economist\">The Economist<\/a><\/i> in 2006, Louis Roederer managing director Frederic Rouzaud said he viewed the attention from rappers with \u00ab\u00a0curiosity and serenity.\u00a0\u00bb Asked if he thought the association would harm the brand, he replied, \u00ab\u00a0that&rsquo;s a good question, but what can we do<\/p>\n<p>We can&rsquo;t forbid people from buying it.
