Napoleon<\/b><\/i>\u00a0is a 2023\u00a0epic<\/a>\u00a0biographical<\/a>\u00a0war film<\/a>\u00a0co-produced and directed by\u00a0Ridley Scott<\/a>\u00a0from a screenplay by\u00a0David Scarpa<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Based on the life of\u00a0Napoleon<\/a>\u00a0and primarily depicting his rise to power, as well as his relationship with his wife,\u00a0Jos\u00e9phine<\/a>, it stars\u00a0Joaquin Phoenix<\/a>\u00a0as Napoleon and\u00a0Vanessa Kirby<\/a>\u00a0as Jos\u00e9phine.<\/p>\n

In October 2020, Scott announced\u00a0Napoleon<\/i>\u00a0as his next project. Following delays and recastings due to the\u00a0COVID-19 pandemic<\/a>, filming began in February 2022 in\u00a0England<\/a>, lasting several months. In addition to writer David Scarpa, frequent Scott collaborators included cinematographer\u00a0Dariusz Wolski<\/a>\u00a0and editor\u00a0Claire Simpson<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Napoleon<\/i>\u00a0premiered at\u00a0Salle Pleyel<\/a>\u00a0in Paris on November 14, 2023, and was released in the United States and United Kingdom on November 22 by\u00a0Columbia Pictures<\/a>\u00a0(via\u00a0Sony Pictures Releasing<\/a>) before streaming on\u00a0Apple TV+<\/a>\u00a0on March 1, 2024.<\/p>\n

The film grossed $221.4\u00a0<\/span>million worldwide and received mixed reviews from critics, who praised the battle sequences and performances but criticized its uneven tone, rushed pacing, and lack of historical accuracy. At the\u00a096th Academy Awards<\/a>, the film received nominations for\u00a0Best Production Design<\/a>,\u00a0Best Costume Design<\/a>, and\u00a0Best Visual Effects<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In 1793, amid the\u00a0French Revolution<\/a>, young army officer\u00a0Napoleon Bonaparte<\/a>\u00a0watches\u00a0Marie Antoinette<\/a>\u00a0beheaded by the\u00a0guillotine<\/a>. Later that year, Revolutionary leader\u00a0Paul Barras<\/a>\u00a0has Napoleon manage the\u00a0Siege of Toulon<\/a>; he storms the city and repels the British ships with artillery. After\u00a0Maximilien Robespierre<\/a>\u00a0is\u00a0deposed and executed<\/a>\u00a0at the end of the\u00a0Reign of Terror<\/a>, French leaders, including Napoleon, attempt to restore stability. Again employing artillery, Napoleon suppresses the royalist insurrection on\u00a013 Vend\u00e9miaire<\/a>\u00a0in 1795.<\/p>\n

Napoleon woos aristocratic widow\u00a0Jos\u00e9phine de Beauharnais<\/a>\u00a0and the two eventually marry. Despite their vigorous sex life, they bear no children. In\u00a0Egypt<\/a>, he prevails again at the\u00a0Battle of the Pyramids<\/a>\u00a0in 1798, but rushes home when he hears Jos\u00e9phine has an almost 10-year younger lover,\u00a0Hippolyte Charles<\/a>. The\u00a0Directory<\/a>\u00a0criticises him for abandoning his troops, but he condemns them for their poor leadership of France and with several collaborators such as\u00a0Talleyrand<\/a>,\u00a0Fouch\u00e9<\/a>,\u00a0Siey\u00e8s<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Ducos<\/a>, overthrows them in the\u00a0Coup of 18 Brumaire<\/a>\u00a0and becomes\u00a0First Consul<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Napoleon is\u00a0crowned<\/a>\u00a0Emperor of the French<\/a>\u00a0by the\u00a0pope<\/a>\u00a0in 1804, during which he audaciously puts the crown on his own head. Foreign Minister Talleyrand suggests to\u00a0Austria<\/a>\u00a0an alliance, though the Austrians dismiss the idea. A year later, Napoleon outmanoeuvres and defeats the Austrians and the Russians at the\u00a0Battle of Austerlitz<\/a>, forcing them to retreat over frozen lakes before bombarding the ice and drowning them. Afterwards, he invites Austrian Emperor\u00a0Francis II<\/a>\u00a0for wine\u2014which Russian Tsar\u00a0Alexander I<\/a>\u00a0declines to attend\u2014and tells Francis that since he did not totally destroy their armies, he expects the latter to be grateful.<\/p>\n

Napoleon’s mother<\/a>\u00a0has him impregnate a mistress, proving that Jos\u00e9phine is infertile. He divorces her in 1810, publicly slapping her in the face when she initially refuses to read her portion of the decree, but the two remain on good terms and continue exchanging friendly letters. Napoleon marries\u00a0Marie Louise of Austria<\/a>, who bears\u00a0a son<\/a>\u00a0one year later.<\/p>\n

In 1812, Napoleon\u00a0invades Russia<\/a>\u00a0after Alexander reneges on the\u00a0Treaties of Tilsit<\/a>. He prevails, despite bloody guerrilla resistance by\u00a0Don Cossacks<\/a>, and then fighting the huge\u00a0Battle of Borodino<\/a>, but finds\u00a0Moscow<\/a>\u00a0empty and later\u00a0set aflame<\/a>. Napoleon retreats during the winter to France, having lost about half a million men. In 1814, the\u00a0Coalition<\/a>\u00a0forces Napoleon’s abdication and exiles him to\u00a0Elba<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In 1815, upon hearing that Jos\u00e9phine is unwell, Napoleon escapes the island and in the\u00a0Hundred Days<\/a>\u00a0returns to power in France. She, having been forced into reclusion at the\u00a0Ch\u00e2teau de Malmaison<\/a>, dies before he arrives. King\u00a0Louis XVIII<\/a>\u00a0sends the Fifth Regiment to stop Napoleon, but he charms them into joining him.<\/p>\n

At the\u00a0Battle of Waterloo<\/a>\u00a0in June, Napoleon, having amassed more troops, confronts the\u00a0British army<\/a>\u00a0under\u00a0Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington<\/a>. French cavalry charges are repulsed by British\u00a0infantry squares<\/a>, and a desperate Napoleon urges his remaining soldiers forward, but this advance is defeated by re-formed lines of enemy infantry. The forces of\u00a0Prussian<\/a>\u00a0Marshal Bl\u00fccher<\/a>\u00a0arrive to reinforce Wellesley, and the French are broken. As Napoleon retreats, he salutes Wellesley.<\/p>\n

Napoleon is exiled, this time to the island of\u00a0Saint Helena<\/a>\u00a0in the middle of the\u00a0Atlantic Ocean<\/a>, and is seen bantering with children, writing his\u00a0memoirs<\/a> that would become read all over the world and presenting to his listeners a version of history where he is always right. An unwell Napoleon collapses, hearing Jos\u00e9phine beckon him to meet her again. Napoleon dies in 1821. An epilogue notes that roughly 3 million people died in his wars.<\/p>\n
