Moulin Rouge is southwest of\u00a0<a title=\"Montmartre\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Montmartre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Montmartre<\/a>, in the Paris district of\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Quartier Pigalle\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Quartier_Pigalle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pigalle<\/a>\u00a0on Boulevard de Clichy in the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"18\u00e8me arrondissement, Paris\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/18%C3%A8me_arrondissement,_Paris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">18th\u00a0<i>arrondissement<\/i><\/a>, and has a landmark red\u00a0<a title=\"Windmill\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Windmill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">windmill<\/a>\u00a0on its roof. The closest m\u00e9tro station is\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Blanche (Paris M\u00e9tro)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blanche_(Paris_M%C3%A9tro)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Blanche<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Moulin Rouge is best known as the birthplace of the modern form of the\u00a0<a title=\"Can-can\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Can-can\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">can-can<\/a>\u00a0dance. Originally introduced as a seductive dance by the\u00a0<a title=\"Courtesan\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Courtesan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">courtesans<\/a>\u00a0who operated from the site, the can-can dance\u00a0<a title=\"Revue\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Revue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">revue<\/a>\u00a0evolved into a form of entertainment of its own and led to the introduction of\u00a0<a title=\"Cabaret\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cabaret\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cabarets<\/a>\u00a0across Europe. Today, the Moulin Rouge is a\u00a0<a title=\"Tourist attraction\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tourist_attraction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tourist attraction<\/a>, offering predominantly musical dance entertainment for visitors from around the world. The club&rsquo;s decor still contains much of the romance of\u00a0<i><a title=\"Fin de si\u00e8cle\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fin_de_si%C3%A8cle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fin de si\u00e8cle<\/a><\/i>\u00a0France.<\/p>\n<p>On 6 October 1889, the Moulin Rouge opened as the\u00a0<b>Jardin de Paris<\/b>,<sup id=\"cite_ref-dtdcafm-cafes-halls-H_2-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-dtdcafm-cafes-halls-J_3-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-4\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0an outdoor garden\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Caf\u00e9 chantant\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Caf%C3%A9_chantant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">caf\u00e9-concert<\/a>, <sup id=\"cite_ref-parisfordreamers-moulin-rouge_5-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>at the foot of the Montmartre hill. Its creator\u00a0<a title=\"Joseph Oller\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joseph_Oller\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joseph Oller<\/a>\u00a0and his Manager\u00a0<a title=\"Charles Zidler\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_Zidler\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Charles Zidler<\/a>\u00a0were formidable businessmen who understood the public&rsquo;s tastes.<\/p>\n<p>The aim was to attract wealthy individuals to experience the ambiance of the fashionable district of\u00a0<a title=\"Montmartre\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Montmartre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Montmartre<\/a>, which was perceived as a form of slumming. The elaborate setting, featuring a garden adorned with a large elephant, provided an environment where individuals from various social strata could interact. This included workers, local residents, artists, the middle class, businessmen, stylish women, and tourists passing through Paris. Nicknamed \u00ab\u00a0The First Palace of Women\u00a0\u00bb by Oller and Zidler, the cabaret swiftly garnered significant acclaim. Key factors contributing to its success included:<sup id=\"cite_ref-Histoire_du_Moulin_Rouge_1-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Revolutionary auditorium architecture enabling rapid changes of d\u00e9cor and fostering social interaction among all patrons.<\/li>\n<li>Champagne evenings characterized by lively entertainment and dancing, featuring regularly changing amusing acts like\u00a0<a title=\"Le P\u00e9tomane\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Le_P%C3%A9tomane\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Le P\u00e9tomane<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>A new dance, inspired by the quadrille and gaining popularity, known as the\u00a0<a title=\"Can-can\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Can-can\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Can-can<\/a>.
