Stargate<\/b><\/i>\u00a0(often stylized in\u00a0all caps<\/a>) is a\u00a0military science fiction<\/a>\u00a0media franchise<\/a>\u00a0owned by\u00a0Amazon MGM Studios<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It is based on\u00a0the film<\/a>\u00a0directed by\u00a0Roland Emmerich<\/a>, which he co-wrote with producer\u00a0Dean Devlin<\/a>; production company\u00a0StudioCanal<\/a>\u00a0owns the rights to the original film. The franchise is based on the idea of an alien\u00a0wormhole<\/a>\u00a0(specifically an\u00a0Einstein\u2013Rosen bridge<\/a>) device (the\u00a0Stargate<\/a>) that enables nearly\u00a0instantaneous travel<\/a>\u00a0across the cosmos.<\/p>\n

The franchise began with the film\u00a0Stargate<\/i><\/a>, released on October 28, 1994, by\u00a0Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Carolco<\/a>, which grossed\u00a0US$<\/a>197\u00a0<\/span>million worldwide.<\/p>\n

<\/sup><\/sup>In 1997,\u00a0Brad Wright<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Jonathan Glassner<\/a>\u00a0created a television series titled\u00a0Stargate SG-1<\/a><\/i>\u00a0as a sequel to the film. This show was joined by\u00a0Stargate Atlantis<\/a><\/i>\u00a0in 2004,\u00a0Stargate Universe<\/a><\/i>\u00a0in 2009, and a prequel web series,\u00a0Stargate Origins<\/a><\/i>, in 2018.<\/p>\n

Also consistent with the same story are a variety of\u00a0books<\/a>, video games and\u00a0comic books<\/a>, as well as the\u00a0direct-to-DVD<\/a>\u00a0movies\u00a0Stargate: Children of the Gods<\/a><\/i>,\u00a0Stargate: The Ark of Truth<\/a><\/i>, and\u00a0Stargate: Continuum<\/a><\/i>, which concluded the first television show after 10 seasons.<\/p>\n

In 2011,\u00a0Stargate Universe<\/i>, the last\u00a0Stargate<\/i>\u00a0program on television ended its run. Brad Wright announced that there were no more plans to continue the same story in further productions.<\/sup><\/p>\n

In 2016, comic publisher American Mythology acquired the rights to publish new\u00a0Stargate Atlantis<\/i>\u00a0stories set within the established franchise canon.<\/p>\n

This was expanded in 2017 to include new\u00a0Stargate Universe<\/i>\u00a0comics as well, resolving the cliffhanger that ended the show.<\/sup>The predominant story arc thus ran for more than 15 years, including 18 seasons (364 episodes) of programming, and 22 comic book issues as of January 2020. However, a variety of other media either ignore this main continuity or reset it, while maintaining essential elements that define the franchise (mainly, the inclusion of a Stargate device).<\/p>\n

These include the 2002 animated series\u00a0Stargate Infinity<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n

In 2017, the franchise was briefly revived with the announcement of a new prequel web series,\u00a0Stargate Origins<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n

<\/sup>Episodes premiered on a central \u00ab\u00a0fan hub\u00a0\u00bb for the franchise called Stargate Command\u00a0with a single season of ten 10-minute episodes.<\/p>\n

The shows themselves are typically set contemporaneous to when they were made, featuring real-world or \u00ab\u00a0realistic\u00a0\u00bb technologies in an otherwise science-fiction setting.
