The franchise is based on the idea of an alien\u00a0<a title=\"Wormhole\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wormhole\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wormhole<\/a>\u00a0(specifically an\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Einstein\u2013Rosen bridge\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Einstein%E2%80%93Rosen_bridge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Einstein\u2013Rosen bridge<\/a>) device (the\u00a0<a title=\"Stargate (device)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stargate_(device)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stargate<\/a>) that enables nearly\u00a0<a title=\"Teleportation\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Teleportation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">instantaneous travel<\/a>\u00a0across the cosmos.<\/p>\n<p>The franchise began with the film\u00a0<a title=\"Stargate (film)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stargate_(film)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Stargate<\/i><\/a>, released on October 28, 1994, by\u00a0<a title=\"Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Carolco\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carolco\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carolco<\/a>, which grossed\u00a0<a title=\"United States dollar\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_dollar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">US$<\/a>197<span class=\"nowrap\">\u00a0<\/span>million worldwide.<\/p>\n<p><sup id=\"cite_ref-estimated_1-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-estimated2_2-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>In 1997,\u00a0<a title=\"Brad Wright\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brad_Wright\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brad Wright<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Jonathan Glassner\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jonathan_Glassner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jonathan Glassner<\/a>\u00a0created a television series titled\u00a0<i><a title=\"Stargate SG-1\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stargate_SG-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stargate SG-1<\/a><\/i>\u00a0as a sequel to the film. This show was joined by\u00a0<i><a title=\"Stargate Atlantis\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stargate_Atlantis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stargate Atlantis<\/a><\/i>\u00a0in 2004,\u00a0<i><a title=\"Stargate Universe\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stargate_Universe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stargate Universe<\/a><\/i>\u00a0in 2009, and a prequel web series,\u00a0<i><a title=\"Stargate Origins\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stargate_Origins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stargate Origins<\/a><\/i>, in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Also consistent with the same story are a variety of\u00a0<a title=\"List of Stargate literature\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_Stargate_literature\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">books<\/a>, video games and\u00a0<a title=\"List of Stargate comics\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_Stargate_comics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">comic books<\/a>, as well as the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Direct-to-DVD\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Direct-to-DVD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">direct-to-DVD<\/a>\u00a0movies\u00a0<i><a title=\"Children of the Gods\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Children_of_the_Gods\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stargate: Children of the Gods<\/a><\/i>,\u00a0<i><a title=\"Stargate: The Ark of Truth\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stargate:_The_Ark_of_Truth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stargate: The Ark of Truth<\/a><\/i>, and\u00a0<i><a title=\"Stargate: Continuum\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stargate:_Continuum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stargate: Continuum<\/a><\/i>, which concluded the first television show after 10 seasons.<\/p>\n<p>In 2011,\u00a0<i>Stargate Universe<\/i>, the last\u00a0<i>Stargate<\/i>\u00a0program on television ended its run. Brad Wright announced that there were no more plans to continue the same story in further productions.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Colvin_3-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>In 2016, comic publisher American Mythology acquired the rights to publish new\u00a0<i>Stargate Atlantis<\/i>\u00a0stories set within the established franchise canon.<\/p>\n<p>This was expanded in 2017 to include new\u00a0<i>Stargate Universe<\/i>\u00a0comics as well, resolving the cliffhanger that ended the show.<sup id=\"cite_ref-4\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>The predominant story arc thus ran for more than 15 years, including 18 seasons (364 episodes) of programming, and 22 comic book issues as of January 2020.
