The film stars\u00a0<a title=\"Jeremy Irons\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jeremy_Irons\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jeremy Irons<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"John Lone\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Lone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John Lone<\/a>, with\u00a0<a title=\"Ian Richardson\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ian_Richardson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ian Richardson<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Barbara Sukowa\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barbara_Sukowa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Barbara Sukowa<\/a>, and\u00a0<a title=\"Annabel Leventon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Annabel_Leventon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Annabel Leventon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The story is loosely based on true events which involved French diplomat\u00a0<a title=\"Bernard Boursicot\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bernard_Boursicot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bernard Boursicot<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Chinese opera\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chinese_opera\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chinese opera<\/a>\u00a0singer\u00a0<a title=\"Shi Pei Pu\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shi_Pei_Pu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shi Pei Pu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ren\u00e9 Gallimard is a French diplomat assigned to Beijing, China in the 1960s. Butterfly<\/a><\/i>, based on the relationship between\u00a0<a title=\"Bernard Boursicot\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bernard_Boursicot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bernard Boursicot<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Shi Pei Pu\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shi_Pei_Pu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shi Pei Pu<\/a>, opened on\u00a0<a title=\"Broadway theatre\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Broadway_theatre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Broadway<\/a>\u00a0in 1988, and was critically and financially successful.\u00a0<a title=\"David Geffen\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/David_Geffen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">David Geffen<\/a>, the play&rsquo;s producer, retained the film rights through\u00a0<a title=\"The Geffen Film Company\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Geffen_Film_Company\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">his company<\/a>. He worked with\u00a0<a title=\"Warner Bros.\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Warner_Bros.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Warner Bros.<\/a>\u00a0on the film and it was given a budget of $17\u201318 million.<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTERodley1997172_1-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTERodley1997174_2-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Cronenberg stated that \u00ab\u00a0Ironically, if there was ever a film of mine that you could call a sellout, it was\u00a0<i>M. Butterfly<\/i>\u00ab\u00a0. He read the film script written by Hwang before seeing his for the first time. Geffen initially wanted\u00a0<a title=\"Peter Weir\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peter_Weir\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Peter Weir<\/a>\u00a0to direct the film, but Weir declined.<\/p>\n<p><sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTECronenberg2006130_3-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTERodley1997xxii_4-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTERodley1997172_1-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0It was the most expensive film directed by Cronenberg until\u00a0<i><a title=\"A History of Violence\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/A_History_of_Violence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A History of Violence<\/a><\/i>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTEMathijs2008171_5-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Cronenberg had parts of the script, such as Americans in Vietnam and bombing scenes, removed as he was not interested in it. The first draft of the script featured Gallimard watching the\u00a0<i><a title=\"Madama Butterfly\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Madama_Butterfly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Madama Butterfly<\/a><\/i>\u00a0opera with his mother as a child.<\/p>\n<p><sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTERodley1997173_6-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>The ending scene between Gallimard and Liling in the\u00a0<a title=\"Police van\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Police_van\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">police van<\/a> was created by Cronenberg as he \u00ab\u00a0just knew that it wouldn&rsquo;t play in prison the way it was in the play\u00a0\u00bb as he felt Liling being allowed in Gallimard&rsquo;s cell and stripping would be unbelievable<\/p>\n<p>Cronenberg auditioned over sixty men for the role of Liling before selecting\u00a0<a title=\"John Lone\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Lone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John Lone<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><sup id=\"cite_ref-8\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>The costume design was done by Cronenberg&rsquo;s sister Denise 5,979 costumes were used in the film. Hairstyling was done by\u00a0<a title=\"Aldo Signoretti\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aldo_Signoretti\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aldo Signoretti<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><sup id=\"cite_ref-9\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>Randy Balsmeyer and Mimi Everett designed the title sequence, which features CGI created using\u00a0<a title=\"Softimage 3D\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Softimage_3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Softimage 3D<\/a>, and purchased around $30,000 worth of antique kimonos for it. It was their first title sequence to be fully computer generated.<\/p>\n<p><sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTEAbrams199424\u201325_10-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>The film was mostly filmed in Toronto and was also shot in Beijing, Budapest, and Paris<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTECronenberg2006131_11-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTECronenberg2006192_12-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0from August to December 1992. It was Cronenberg&rsquo;s first film to be shot outside of Canada.
