To the surprise of the divers the contents of the bottles were perfectly preserved, which is what inspired everyone\u2019s favourite Champagne house, Veuve Clicquot, to launch its Cellar in the Sea program.<\/h5>\n<h5>As part of this 40-year-long experiment Veuve Clicquot has submerged a batch of bottled bubbles 40 metres below the water\u2019s surface to see if this natural cellar is an effective way of storing Champagne. The lack of light and low temperature \u2013 the water temperature remains at 4 degrees Celsius throughout the year \u2013 make for superb storage conditions.<\/h5>\n<h5>The Champagne house also stored a batch of the same Champagne in Maison Clicquot\u2019s cellar, the Cray\u00e8res, which are former chalk quarries, beneath the city of Reims. The experience will begin in Champagne with a garden lunch among the vine and continue in the Cray\u00e8res, followed by a gala dinner at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.veuveclicquot.com\/en-au\/our-domain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">H\u00f4tel du Marc<\/a>, the private residence of Veuve Clicquot.<\/h5>\n<h5>You will then travel by air to board a sailing ship which will take you to the remote island of Silversk\u00e5r, where you will stay for two nights in the midst of the Midsummer celebrations. During your voyage you will taste some of the House\u2019s rarest vintages paired with traditional dishes prepared by some of the finest starred chefs in the region.<\/h5>\n<h5>And for the piece de resistance, guests will also be invited to meet the driver who discovered the wreck in 2010. If you\u2019re an experienced diver you will also be able to descend with him into the depths to see the incredible \u00c5land Vault, where the precious bottles are submerged.<\/h5>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<h6>Since the magnificent champagne find was made on the wreck outside \u00c5land\u2019s Silversk\u00e4r, there has been a beautiful connection between Champagne and the \u00c5land population. It\u2019s been more than a decade since the first bottles of\u00a0<em>Juglar<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.veuveclicquot.com\/en-gb\/cellar-in-the-sea-experience\"><em>Veuve Clicquot\u00a0<\/em><\/a>from 1840 were salvaged and auctioned off at record prices before the world\u2019s fascinated eyes. Already when I had my first meeting on \u00c5land as an exclusive consultant for the \u00c5land Landscape Government, it was clear that the most important thing for the \u00c5land people was to put \u00c5land on the map, and they have certainly done that. Unfortunately, it went exactly as I predicted in my\u00a0<em>\u201cJuhlin report\u201d.<\/em><\/h6>\n<h6>\u2018After all, I wanted the bottles to remain under water in a pristine environment for as long as possible to still be vital and enjoyable.\u2019<\/h6>\n<h6>When it didn\u2019t work for practical reasons, it took less than a year before the bottles were lifeless and completely uninteresting from a wine connoisseur\u2019s perspective. The original plan to create a new cuv\u00e9e of young wines with a splash of 1840 Silversk\u00e4r was shelved by\u00a0<em>Dominique Demarville\u00a0<\/em>to the great disappointment of the \u00c5land people.<\/h6>\n<h6>Fortunately, however, Veuve Clicquot continued its involvement in the project and found an important lifeline in that immediately after the auction they began a very interesting project called\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veuveclicquot.com\/en-gb\/cellar-in-the-sea-experience\">Cellar in the Sea.\u00a0<\/a><\/em>In short, it\u2019s about seeing how sparkling wine develops when stored with the same pressure on the outside as on the inside in seawater at a significantly lower temperature than the one you have in champagne cellars.<\/h6>\n<h6>It was decided to sink a few hundred bottles of\u00a0<em>2004 Veuve Clicquot Ros\u00e9, Veuve Clicquot Demi-Sec (2010-base), Yellow Label (2010-base)\u00a0<\/em>and<em>\u00a0Veuve Clicquot Brut (2008-base)<\/em>\u00a0in magnums in metal cages to 50 meters deep in a temperature of 4.5 degrees and put away exactly the same amount of these wines in the cellars of Reims.
