Description
Founded in 1760 by François Delamotte, Lanson is one of the oldest houses in Champagne.
The symbol that distinguishes it is the cross of the Order of the Knights of Malta, of which François’ son was a member. Over time it came to the definition of an original style, until the award, in 1900,
of the title of « Official Supplier of Champagne for Queen Victoria ».
The keywords of Lanson’s stylistic code are the purity of the fruit, which is kept fresh and elegant through vinification without malolactic fermentation and vinification of the grapes parcel by parcel, and aromatic richness, given by the choice of the best Cru. Only recently has the maison admitted partial malolactic fermentation for the production of some Champagnes.
Among the Champagne of the maison stands the « Clos Lanson » (96 pt. Wine Enthusiast), produced by the prestigious one hectare vineyard located in front of the Cathedral of Reims, which enjoys a unique microclimate and the lively and delicate Black Label, (91 pt. Wine Spectator)
Maison Lanson has chosen to only vintage years considered exceptional, which have the capacity to stand the test of time while retaining incredible freshness.
The Vintage Collection 1989 offers a generous mouthfeel, highlighted by a silky touch. This cuvée is a blend of Pinot Noir (56%) and Chardonnay (44%) from the Grands Crus terroirs of Cramant, Chouilly and Oger on the Côte des Blancs, Verzenay and Bouzy in the Montagne de Reims as well as Aÿ in the Marne Valley.
The year 1989 was marked by a very cool spring followed by a hot summer. The harvest began in early September, which was early at the time, and produced very beautiful grapes. The winter and spring frosts even produced second bunches that were harvested in October. To the eye, this superb champagne cuvée offers an old gold color with some copper highlights. The gourmet bouquet expresses aromas of very developed candied fruits, revealing accents of humus. On the palate, the attack is fleshy, the texture ample and warm and the finely chalky finish is very persistent.
This Vintage Collection 1989 champagne from Maison Lanson will pair wonderfully with small game birds such as pheasant or pigeon. Characteristics Terroirs Grape varieties:
